Alcohol Abuse Rehabilitation

Alcohol is by far the most abused drug in America. Many people will find that statement shocking because they aren’t even aware that alcohol is a drug. Alcohol is also the oldest drug known to man and has been used medicinally and abused since the beginning of time. The Bible contains many references to the ills of “drunkenness” and its effects on the user and society. Alcohol is so commonly used and when used “responsibly” is considered so socially acceptable that abusers often go undetected. Denial is easier for the alcoholic than with other drugs as well since it is legal and something that “everybody does”. It can be difficult for the abuser to recognize the difference between him or herself and others around them who drink occasionally. It can be difficult to admit there is a problem to themselves and even more difficult to ask for help. A good alcohol rehab center can be essential in helping the alcoholic truly understand the nature of their problem and finding strategies to overcome their addiction.

Alcohol rehabilitation takes time and patience. The alcoholic has a long road to recovery and a long term program of 60 days or more is highly recommended. The alcoholic will need time to detox the alcohol from their system, learn about the negative effects of alcohol and begin to develop new patterns of behavior and coping strategies for stressful situations. Alcoholism usually develops over a period of years and the alcoholic has usually been abusing alcohol for a very long time before seeking, or being forced to seek help for the problem.

The alcoholic will require a great deal of support from family and friends after being released from the alcohol rehab center. He or she will face many challenges that are unique to alcohol addiction recovery. Unlike users of other drugs, the alcoholic is bombarded with advertising on billboards, in magazines and on television telling him or her how wonderful drinking is and how much “fun” they could be having. A support group can be very helpful after successfully completing a program at a qualified drug and alcohol rehab center. The alcoholic will most likely need a new circle of friends to replace his or her old drinking buddies who will have to be avoided in order to successfully overcome the addiction of alcohol.

It is never an easy path to overcome any type of addiction, but with the support of family and friends, a qualified alcohol rehab center, a good support group and the desire to live clean an alcoholic can overcome the addiction and lead a healthy, satisfying and successful life. Most insurance companies will cover treatment for alcohol addiction and you should check with your insurance provider and the drug and alcohol rehab center before enrolling in the program to see if they will work together. Many times an alcoholic will avoid long term treatment out of fear of losing their job, but it should be noted that alcoholics are covered under the “Americans with Disabilities Act” and cannot be fired for seeking treatment for what is considered the illness of alcoholism.
