For many years the myth that alcoholism is a disease and
especially a disease that you could inherit from your parents
has been cycling around. In reality it is a behavior that
a person has learned in an attempt to avoid dealing with the
real emotional problems in their lives. That is the real reason
it runs in families; it has been learned by example. A person
has learned most of what they know about conflict resolution
from their families. In the case of a dysfunctional family,
they have learned to avoid resolution and in many cases drown
their emotions through the use of alcohol or other substances.
The proper treatment of alcoholism addresses these issues
and helps the alcoholic learn to deal with their emotions
and find solutions to their conflicts instead of covering
them up or drowning them out. A good alcohol rehabilitation
program will spend a good portion of time dealing with uncovering
and finding resolutions to even hidden conflicts in the alcoholic’s
mind. Once the alcoholic has learned some new techniques and
strategies for understanding and dealing with conflict, their
desire for alcohol will naturally begin to decrease. Learning
to be happy rather than covering up feelings of sadness, loneliness
or depression takes time, but is very rewarding in the end.
An alcohol rehab is more than just a place to sober up. It
is a place to learn new skills. It is a place to evaluate
life. It is a place to set goals for the future. It is a place
to learn to dream again. Life no longer needs to be an endless
cycle of getting stressed and getting drunk over and over
again. An alcoholic can find new purpose and a new zest for
life. A good drug and alcohol rehab can be a place to begin
a new life. Nobody can change the past. The alcoholic must
ask for forgiveness from those who his or her behavior has
harmed. They must also learn to forgive themselves and then
move forward. The choices we make today dictate the future
we have tomorrow. An alcoholic who learns to make new choices
today makes a new future for tomorrow.
A good alcohol rehab will last at least 60 days. Traditionally,
programs lasted 28 days based on the premise that it takes
28 days to form a new habit. The problem is that for the first
one to two weeks, the alcoholic is dealing with the withdrawal
from alcohol, lack of sleep, etc and the frustration of being
in a rehab. This leaves only 2 or 3 weeks to change habits
and that is just not enough. A longer rehab will allow time
for the addict to get used to being without alcohol and deal
with their new surroundings and then work on developing new
habits.
It can be very difficult for an alcoholic to admit they need
help. Alcohol has been their trusted friend for many years
and it can be difficult to say “goodbye”. However,
with a good alcohol rehab center and the support of friends
and family an alcoholic can turn their life around and begin
anew.
