How could UPS’s CIP help the organization improve its response to diversity?

Mark Colvard, a United Parcel manager in San Ramon, California, recently faced a difficult decision. One of his drivers asked for two weeks off to help an ailing family member. But company rules said this driver wasn’t eligible. If Colvard went by the book, the driver would probably take the days off anyway and be fired. On the other hand, Colvard was likely to be criticized by other drivers if he bent the rules. Colvard chose to give the driver the time off. While he took some heat for the decision, he also kept a valuable employee.
Had Colvard been faced with this decision six months earlier, he says he would have gone the other way. What changed his thinking was a month he spent living in McAllen, Texas. It was part of a UPS management training experience called the Community Internship Program (CIP). During his month in McAllen, Colvard built housing for the poor, collected clothing for the Salvation Army, and worked in a drug rehab center. Colvard gives the program credit for helping him empathize with employees facing crises back home. And he says that CIP has made him a better manager. “My goal was to make the numbers, and in some cases that meant not looking at the individual but looking at the bottom line. After that one-month stay, I immediately started reaching out to people in a different way.”
CIP was established by UPS in the late-1960s to help open the eyes of the company’s predominantly white managers to the poverty and inequality in many cities. Today, the program takes 50 of the company’s most promising executives each summer and brings them to cities around the country. There they deal with a variety of problems—from transportation to housing, education, and health care. The company’s goal is to awaken these managers to the challenges that many of their employees face, bridging the cultural divide that separates a white manager from an African-American driver or an upper-income suburbanite from a worker raised in the rural South.

Why should i not kill myself? or run away? or just somehow escape my current life, it sucks.?

I am 15 years old. In my past i have smoked weed, and drank. prob smoked weed about 100 times in the last two years. thats on average three times a month.

my mom caught me smoking weed twice, and i owned up to doing it the other night.

she brought me to a drug rehab center, which is absolutely ridiculous, considering its a common thing for me age.

they want me to go there after school, four days a week, for a minimum of two months. from 4pm to 9pm. THERE GOES MY LIFE.

my happiness revolves around my friends, by going to this stupid place, i lose my friends and social life, and therefore my happiness too. in addition, my parents wont let me go out anywhere.

my life sucks, and its not worth living through this horrible part, especially cause i didnt even do anything wrong.

i hate my parents. HATE.
i hate my life now too.
help.
ive tried telling them i wont do it anymore. they dont listen or care. and i DO mean it.

How do you tell your Alcoholic Father your afraid hes dying, and that your scared to death for his life?

Long story short – My father has been an alcoholic my whole life.A really really bad alcoholic. My mom left him when I was around 3 or 4 because she just couldn’t take the drinking. Since then hes tried really hard to be a good father to me, but the drinking just ruined him for so many years. He lost his house, lost his job, and had to move back in with my grandmother. We’ve gotten a little bit closer since I’ve gotten older, but we still don’t talk much about to many personal things. Anyways, I work in a drug/rehab center. I had a man tonight almost die in my arms (literally) with drawling from alcohol. As soon as he stopped breathing all I could think about & see in him was my father. I’ve been a wreck ever since, I broke down in tears at work and everything. How do I tell him that this could be him and that I need him in my life and I want him to be there to walk me down the aisle one day when I get married and be there for the birth of my babies, we’re not close like that so I don’t know what to say or how to say it. I have never once in my life talked to him about his drinking. Any advice for someone who’s been through something like this? I would really appriciate it. Thank you

Client Prepared Meals in Rehab

Client prepared dinners in rehabilitation are usually a natural part of occupational treatment that can assist the patients get prepared for successful road to rehabilitation when they start their unique lives. Some treatment programs require the client to spend at least a little time concentrating on this vital aspect of coaching the client to achieve success as they depart the facility. Many others permit the patient to play a part as long as the patient shows that it will be an advantageous part of the therapy, contributing to the self-confidence and empowerment for the duration of recovery.

Can pregnant women be denied the use of a private business restroom?

A woman entered the place where I work & asked to use the restroom, I allowed her to use it. There is a drug rehab center about 1/4 mile west from there & we continuosly have their patients come in for directions to there or ask to use our restroom. Our restroom is for customer use only. I did not tell her that before. 4 minutes before closing time she came in again asking to use the restroom again; another employee was using the restroom. Not trying to be rude I told her & the other female that accompanied her that we closed in four minutes & I wouldn’t be able to let her use the facilities. She started to use profanity & said that according to California law no pregnant woman can be denied the use of a restroom & threatned to call the local advocacy for pregnant women & the local authorities. The woman was short & round all over. Pregnant women come into my place of business all the time & she just did not look pregnant. But, is it true, can they not be denied the use of a restroom?
