Drug Addiction

Choosing a Drug Abuse Treatment Center

<<  Back to Articles Page

Addiction is a problem that affects a person on every level: physically, emotionally and spiritually. Not only does it affect the user on every level, it also affects everyone around them. Friends, family and even co-workers are unwittingly made a part of the addict’s problems. Breaking free of the bonds of drug addiction will take the care and support of the people that care and the help of a qualified alcohol and/or drug addiction treatment center. No matter how loving, supportive and well-meaning family and friends may be, they do not have the knowledge, skills and abilities to help their loved one overcome drug addiction on their own. Most of the time the family members find that they need information, counseling and support groups for themselves because being a part of a drug addicts life is a problem all of its own.

Treatment centers for drug addiction rehabilitation come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Their programs and procedures may vary greatly. It is important to research as many as are available to you and find the best fit for your situation and circumstances. Rehab programs may vary in their content and in the way they are expressed, but there are some common factors that should be present in all of them. They should allow the addict time to heal from the physical symptoms of withdrawal. This time will vary depending on the drug of choice of the addict. Some take hours, some days and some may take weeks or even months to fully exit the body. The program should also educate the addict. The addict needs to learn the dangers of their drug use, how it affects them and those around them and they also need to learn new strategies for dealing with stress and possible “triggers” that might tempt them to use substances again. They need to know not only how to avoid these triggers, but also what to do when temptation arises. It can be easy to avoid using drugs during their stay at a residential treatment center, but they eventually have to live in the real world and they will need real world strategies for dealing with their issues.

Long term drug rehab is usually preferable in most cases. Drug addiction is a powerful thing and a lot of preparation is needed before the addict can successfully face the obstacles to living a clean, drug-free lifestyle. A good drug abuse treatment center will focus on all aspects of the person. The physical, helping them to care for their bodies with proper nutrition and exercise and to understand how healthy living can help to reduce cravings for substances. Emotional, learning to forgive themselves and others and how to deal with their emotions in a positive, healthy way. Spiritual, most programs include searching for an understanding of God (often referred to as “a higher power”) and how He is able to help them when they cannot help themselves. Prayer and meditation can be very useful tools in helping the addict recover and choose a healthy lifestyle.

Whatever type of drug abuse treatment center you choose, know that admitting you need help is the first step. If you are committed to recover and live a healthy life you can do it with the proper training and tools. Breaking the bonds that addiction has on our society begins one addict at a time.
