There are many different aspects to a good drug addiction
treatment program. For some drugs, such as heroin, the detox
process (getting the drugs out of the body) and the physical
pain of withdrawal are the most difficult part of the process.
Other drugs, such as cocaine require less of a physical detox
and more work on controlling the desire to do the drug. To
be effective any drug addiction treatment program needs to
focus to some degree on the physical, emotional and spiritual
needs of the addict in order to successfully overcome the
addiction to drugs.
Drug addiction treatment is a difficult process and requires
a great deal of skill and experience to be successful. A treatment
program should have specific goals and a very specific plan
of action for achieving those goals. The program is, however,
only as good as the people that are running it. The staff
of a good drug addiction treatment program should be highly
trained and very patient. They also need to have a genuine
concern for the addict and an honest interest in seeing them
become drug-free. The program should also include training
and support for the family and friends of the addict so that
they can continue to help the person stay on track with their
goals once they leave the drug addiction treatment facility.
The use of several methodologies can be of great value in
a drug addiction treatment program. Often the use of medications
to either help with the detox process or to treat an underlying
mental illness condition is required for the addict to successfully
complete the drug rehab program. Many times a person begins
their journey to drug addiction in an attempt to “self-medicate”
their mental or physical ailments and giving them the appropriate
and legal medication for their condition is of great importance
in helping them move towards an addiction free life.
Psychological counseling to help deal with emotional and
mental health issues is also of great importance to the drug
addiction treatment program. Counseling can help the person
to uncover and find new ways to deal with their emotional
issues, without the use of addictive or illegal drugs. The
addict will also be able to learn strategies for avoiding
certain “triggers” that may tempt them to use
drugs again and how to deal with the temptation should it
arise, through the counseling process.
Patients that use meditation and prayer and hold themselves
accountable to God (often referred to as “a higher power”)
has been proven to increase the likelihood for success in
a drug addiction treatment program. One of the steps in a
“twelve step program” involves accepting that
the addict is incapable of overcoming the addiction on their
own and turning it over to the “higher power”
(God).
A good drug addiction treatment program at an established
and successful drug rehab facility is the best hope for a
person who is addicted to drugs and for their family and friends.
With diligence, hard work and commitment on all parts, the
addict can find healing and go on to lead a productive and
meaningful life.
