Every person who is involved in any way in the life of a
drug addict is affected by the addict’s behavior. There
are broken promises, missing items and erratic behavior to
deal with. There are always lies, lies and then more lies.
Finding a successful drug rehab center for yourself, a friend
or loved one is an important first step in improving the lives
of everyone involved. Studies have shown that the success
rate for overcoming drug or alcohol addiction without the
help of a qualified drug rehab center is so small, it is virtually
non-existent.
There are several things to look for in a successful drug
rehab program. You will want to find a program that is longer
than the old standard of 28 days. A 60 or 90 day program has
been shown to be much more effective. The first two weeks
of any alcohol or drug rehab program are usually spent getting
the drugs and alcohol out of the body and dealing with the
emotions of being in rehab. That leaves just two weeks to
learn new behaviors and strategies to overcome the habits
of alcohol and drug use that have usually been going on for
a period of years. That is simply not enough time. Several
studies have shown that it takes at least one month to learn
a new habit. Six weeks would be the minimum amount of time
to be able to accomplish the detox process and learn some
new habits and behaviors and more is, of course, better.
The next thing you should look for in a successful drug rehab
center is whether they treat all aspects of the person who
is addicted to drugs. A good drug rehab program will deal
with the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of addiction
and help the addict to look for ways to improve in all of
these areas. A healthy diet and exercise program should be
implemented to teach the addict how to properly care for their
body and physical health. Counseling should be available to
help the addict understand the unresolved issues in their
lives that may have triggered their drug use. They will also
need to learn strategies for dealing with emotional stressors
in a new and healthy way. Most rehab programs include acknowledging
God (often referred to as “a higher power”) and
the need to turn problem that are too large over to him. Meditation
and prayer are good alternatives to the “escape”
of alcohol or drugs and part of learning new ways to handle
the stresses of life.
Finally, you will want to find a drug rehab facility with
a warm, friendly, home-like atmosphere. Can you imagine going
to a residential drug rehab that looks and feels like a prison?
Think of how that might affect your ability to fully focus
on your recovery and move to a more positive future. A home-like
atmosphere will allow the addict to be more at ease and focus
their attention on the process of overcoming their addictions.
A little research is required to find a successful drug
rehab center that will work for you. The difference this will
make in the long run is immeasurable and cannot be overestimated.
