Gender Specific Drug Rehab

<<  Back to Articles Page

Dealing with overcoming a serious addiction to drugs or alcohol is a difficult process. It requires complete focus on the task at hand. Attending a gender specific drug rehab can help avoid the distractions of possible romantic intrigue that often develop (and hinder progress) in a coed facility. A person who is trying to detox their body from drugs or alcohol is in a delicate emotional state and prone to make bad judgments in their search for love and acceptance. A fellow addict may seem to really” understand” them and often marriages and other relationships are compromised do to emotional entanglements created in a coed rehab.

A gender specific program allows the addict the opportunity to focus all their energies on the prospect of overcoming their addictions. Without outside distractions, the entire point of an inpatient drug rehab program, they are free to really examine themselves and discover the unresolved issues that may be triggering their drug or alcohol use. They can then begin to learn new behaviors and strategies to avoid and work through the situations that might trigger using drugs or alcohol. Getting emotionally involved with a fellow addict in a coed rehab is another way of avoiding the real issues and dealing with ways to resolve them in order to repair their current relationships.

Women are especially vulnerable to the advances of men during the drug rehab program. They have a diminished sense of self esteem and feeling that someone is attracted to them gives them a boost of self confidence. This boost coupled with the fact that they can distract themselves from the problems they are dealing with help them to complete avoid the uncomfortable feelings of being out of control and trying to change their behavior. Women are often taken advantage of sexually in coed rehab facilities due to this vulnerability and the men have no contact with them after rehab even though the woman believed they had started a relationship. She then leaves rehab worse of then when she began and often goes right back to drugs and alcohol to drown the feelings of betrayal and disappointment she feels. This could all have been avoided by attending a women only drug rehab center.

Men are subject to distracting themselves with sexual attraction and use the opportunity of vulnerable women to avoid dealing with their emotional issues. It is also a matter of self-esteem since they are likely humiliated by having had to admit to being an addict and “out-of-control”. Seducing a woman helps them feel powerful and needed again in addition to avoiding the work of overcoming their addiction to drugs or alcohol.

There are many other benefits of gender specific drug rehab as well. Men and women tend to deal with things in very different ways. They have different ways of dealing with emotions. They also have differences in the way they deal with their addictions. A gender specific drug rehab program can work with these differences and be a much more effective way of dealing with the drug addiction of a woman or a man.
