Heroin Addiction Treatment

<<  Back to Articles Page

Heroin is among the most addictive drugs available today. It is a derivative of morphine and belongs to a class of drugs know as opiates. These drugs have a powerful effect on the brain chemistry and tolerance and addiction are built up quickly. There are three main ways people use heroin. The most commonly known is by intravenous injection where the user heats the powdered heroin until it becomes a liquid then draws it into a syringe and injects it either into the veins or muscles. The next common way is by chopping the powder more finely and snorting it through the nose. The third way is by smoking it either mixed in with a tobacco or marijuana cigarette or by inhaling the vapors while heating the heroin (known as “chasing the dragon”).

Withdrawal symptoms are very intense and the best way to perform heroin rehab is in a drug rehabilitation center that specializes in heroin addiction treatment. Suddenly quitting heroin without any drug addiction rehabilitation, known as quitting “cold turkey” can cause very painful withdrawals and may lead to a cardiac arrest. The pain and discomfort is usually so severe that the addict goes right back for more heroin since, in their minds, that is the only thing that will stop the pain.

With proper heroin addiction treatment at a qualified drug rehab center it is possible for the addict to find healing and go on to lead a normal life. The addict must learn strategies that he or she can use throughout the rest of their life to prevent a relapse and a qualified heroin addiction treatment program will provide the tools and strategies that are needed well beyond just the detox phase. Without proper drug treatment it is unlikely for a person to overcome heroin addiction.

There are several different drug treatment options available for heroin addiction treatment. An inpatient drug rehab is usually more effective for this type of addiction treatment. The addict needs to get away from the “triggers” that lead him or her to use the drugs. Many experts also feel that a long term drug rehab is the most successful type of drug rehab center for heroin addiction. Time is needed to learn new behaviors and understand how to recognize and avoid the “triggers”.

Losing a loved one due to drug addiction is a tragic thing. If you or a loved one is suffering from a heroin addiction problem, every attempt should be made to get to a good drug abuse treatment center as soon as possible. You cannot force the choice on an addict who is not ready, but you can find a successful drug rehab center and be prepared to go if your loved one decides he or she is ready to enter a drug abuse center. The window of opportunity may be very short from the time the addict decides they would like to quit and the pain of withdrawal sends them back on the streets looking for more heroin. So, knowing in advance the location and policies of a good treatment center for heroin rehab may be your only chance of helping your loved one recover from this painful addiction.
