Heroin addiction is one of the toughest obstacles for drug
rehabs today. Heroin is so physically addicting that usually
the first time a person tries it they are hooked. Purity levels
for heroin are extremely high in the US allowing for people
to smoke it and snort it. This has caused younger people to
become addicted to heroin because it no longer has to be used
with a needle. More and more we are finding heroin in suburban
areas being used by young teenagers who are now doing anything
in order to support their habit.
Heroin dependency is the strongest of any
drugs. Many heroin addicts suffer extreme physical pain and
agony because of the potency of the drug. Addicts also gain
strong degrees of tolerance and physical dependency from the
heroin, which are also powerful motivating factors for compulsive
heroin usage and abuse. As with abusers of any addictive substance,
heroin abusers gradually spend more and more of their time
and energy in finding ways to obtain the drug. Once the person
is addicted, the heroin abusers' main purpose in life becomes
seeking and using heroin. The heroin not only changes the
mind and the brain but more importantly changes the person’s
integrity.
Heroin physical dependence develops with
higher doses of the substance. With heroin physical dependence,
the body adapts to the presence of the drug and withdrawal
symptoms occur if the usage of the heroin is reduced suddenly.
Heroin withdrawal may occur within a few hours after the last
usage that the heroin is taken. Symptoms of heroin withdrawal
include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea,
vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps ("cold turkey"),
and leg movements. Major heroin withdrawal symptoms peak between
24 and 48 hours after the last dose of heroin and subside
after about seven days. However, some individuals have shown
persistent heroin withdrawal signs for a few months. Heroin
withdrawal is never fatal to otherwise healthy adults, but
it can cause death to the fetus of a pregnant heroin addict
women.
In many cases people addicted to heroin demand to be medically
detoxed before seeking treatment. Families are sometimes talked
into believing that detox is enough. This is not true because
all detox does is taper a person down of the heroin so they
don’t feel the withdrawal effects. Unfortunately the
underlying issues have never been addressed which is what
effective drug rehab programs will do.
