For many addicts and alcoholics, long term drug rehab programs
offer more effective and permanent treatment options. Because
of the nature of this kind of treatment, one will more commonly
find that long-term treatment occurs in residential facilities
offering care around the clock in a non-hospital setting.
The best-known long term program model is the therapeutic
community (TC), but residential treatment may also employ
other models, such as bio-physical therapy.
Long term drug rehab programs generally range from three
to twelve months in length and, although the specifics vary
from program to program, the focus is the same: a) give the
individual a substantial amount of time in which he can get
to the root of his addiction(s) and b) give him the tools
to live a drug free life outside of treatment. Long term programs
seek to assess the various facets of addiction or alcoholism
while addressing one’s personal accountability and responsibility
for choices made—both the good and the bad. A well-rounded
drug rehab program will offer aid in refining one’s
basic life skills such as communication, relationships and
dealing with situations.
Through long term drug rehabilitation, addicts are afforded
the opportunity to experience what sober living truly feels
like. While a 28 or 30 day program may work for some, many
need more time than those four short weeks to reflect on months
or years of drug and alcohol abuse. The struggle of withdrawal
or detox can sometimes take up half of one’s time in
treatment, giving little or no time for substantial rehabilitation
to occur.
For many, the cost of long term drug rehab can be a setback.
Low cost or free drug treatment centers do exist, majority
of which are faith-based. One free treatment program like
this that we would recommend is Teen Challenge—a program
originally founded for teens but which has now expanded to
an adult program as well.
Our programs address the mental, emotional and biophysical
aspects of addiction—meaning that the physical addiction
is taken up through a cellular sauna cleansing process before
a cognitive therapy process and finally a life skills course
series—all of which are geared toward developing skills
for maintaining sobriety upon completion of the program.
