The abuse of prescription drugs is a growing and often undetected
problem in today’s society. Often the problem starts
with a legitimate prescription for a valid medical concern
such as dental pain or a back injury. Many prescription drugs
are known to be addictive, but the prescribing physician feels
that since the ailment is short term there is no risk of addiction.
This assumption is often misguided as the patient may request
a refill under the premise that the pain is still there and
usually gets it. This becomes a vicious cycle because the
pain medications not only slow down the healing process, but
the build-up of them in the muscles actually causes pain,
especially when the patient tries to stop taking them. It
is not long before the person is in need of prescription drug
rehab.
Another part of the problem is that many people know that
they can get a good “high” simply be exceeded
the recommended dose of the prescription pain killers. People
who frequent doctors and dentist and are aware of this will
often create ailments in order to request prescription drugs
from their doctor or dentist. They then sell these pain pills
to friends and co-workers and make some extra spending money.
Selling the drugs can be as addictive and damaging as taking
them. Seeking rehabilitation for drug abuse from a qualified
drug treatment center is more necessary than the person might
believe. Many people imagine that there is no harm from this
behavior because these are “prescriptions” that
they could get from a doctor and they convince themselves
that they do really have pain (probably from too many drugs
in their system!) so they rationalize their behavior. Some
other misguided thought patterns are that the user isn’t
addicted (“I can quit whenever I want to”- classic
addict denial) or that since this is a prescription they believe
quitting on their own will be easy. None of these is true
and the addict should seek treatment for drug addiction at
a qualified drug addiction rehab center.
Many treatment centers have programs have rehab programs
that would be very helpful for this type of drug addiction
rehabilitation. The program at the drug treatment center should
use the latest drug addiction treatment practices in order
to help the user realize the extent of their problem, how
their problem affects others, that they are unable to “fix”
the problem on their own and give them appropriate steps to
overcome both the emotional and physical aspects of their
prescription drug addiction problem.
Addiction is a difficult problem and it affects everyone
